Letter to Daniel #5

by Chris on August 11, 2009

Dear Son,

The past week has been busy! The doctor is helping Mom to really figure out what’s going on that makes her stay in bed and feel depressed. For the first time in years, I think they’re on the right path to get this figured out and help mom live her life the way she wants to (yay!).  We had a pretty good week over-all. I can’t think of too much to “report” to you today, since the past week has been fairly uneventful.

I’m glad to hear that you are doing well with the school part of the experience. Since I’m up at Microsoft today, mom had to take Kaye in for her new student interview with Mr. Hayes. Mom was amazed at the way he speaks to kids, and she came out of the interview feeling like she wished she could sign up at TRCS too lol. It really hit her about how important it is to learn to sit in a class, do the homework even though you don’t want to, so when you grow up you can do what you WANT to do, etc. Kaye  is still claiming she doesn’t want to go, but hopefully that will get better after she makes a couple friends. I’m also hoping that this WYA experience has given you a more mature picture of the world, so you don’t feel so annoyed that she’s going to school with you there. If not, that’s ok too. 🙂

Hmm what else… the cats are still alive, although Michael has had a couple close calls. That kid I tell you what…. he sure makes EVIL cute! 🙂  Gilly wasn’t doing so well though (she is VERY OLD!!) so mom and Hannah took her in today to be put down. It’s sad, but at the same time that dog had an amazing life and at least this way she can go to rest without living out her remaining days in suffering and cold (as winter is on it’s way!).

Ok – Proverbs 11 today… I usually just try to pick one or two verses to share, but this chapter is full of wisdom that jumped off the page at me and made me think of the experience you’re going through! 🙂

Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”  This verse talks about the value of wanting to hear what someone has to say, instead of shutting them up and telling them “I KNOW!!” Swallow your pride and open your heart, you will become wise.

Ever wonder where the phrase “If you don’t have anything nice to say than don’t say anything at all” came from? How about thousands of years ago from King Solomon… 🙂 Proverbs 11:12 says, “A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue.

Proverbs 11:15:  “He who puts up security for another will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe.” This is a Dave Ramsey verse lol. It means that if you co-sign for someone else who can’t get a loan on their own, you will probably have to pay it yourself, and you deserve what you get for being so foolish! It sounds greedy I know, but the underlying message is that if you can afford to, just give the money instead, but don’t co-sign for someone else’s debt.

Proverbs 11:29: “He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.” I have seen this one be true over and over in my lifetime. With the exception of the few Paris Hilton’s of the world, the people “on top” are the ones who have wisdom and self discipline and are willing to work hard because of it. The people on the “bottom” float through life, blaming their problems on everyone else, but in the end work for the people “on top.”

I’m going to print out a letter my dad sent you the day before you started WYA, and I only just now got around to printing and sending. Sorry about that!

Well I hope you’re having a good week, and as always we’re all very proud of you and can’t wait to hear from you again!

Love,

Dad
